Why all this corporate nonsense text? Just say you want to cut cost and thus remove the expensive models. |

Is there still a chance that Sonnet and Opus gets selected by Auto? |

Please reconsider the decision or at least provide an experience for these models for 6 months rather than a year or provide any alternative solutions... It doesn't make sense for you to do that... A large and well-established company like Microsoft and has a reputation and many years of achievements and support... You should be up to this responsibility, especially towards the students... There are very small companies that offer such offers, so it is unreasonable to cancel it.... We know that there are many influences and things... But this is a big change, it has to be a middle change to be fair. |

Very dissapointing, promising to provide students with access to latest industry AI tools and techs for growth and development, they just removed the opus 4.6, sonnet 4.6, gemini 3.1, gpt 5.4, from the student's pack, and adding it to premium prices for premium customers, totally disastrous and injustice to students like us, who don't have money to pay for such premium models or use them being a student at this level. This has hugely affected the productivity, and learning opportunities, and even learning and building projects. Previously Github was the best resource for students to provide this golden opportunity but, with this sudden change in their policies, they just smashed millions of dreams, and project goals and learning opportunities for students. Nowadays Antigravity is far better than this colpilot. Better switching to Antigravity is more superior to use as it offers a basic limited use for opus 4.6 and others. |

So I upgraded to Copilot Pro (the immediately paid version, not the trial), and within a minute of taking payment my access to Copilot Pro was suspended by GitHub and "due to security reasons" they can't tell me why. I have used Copilot Pro (through Student first, now paid) for a while now, and have not changed my behaviour or gone beyond any rate limits. Anyone else finding themselves in the same position now? |

Hello can someone tell me. If educator's account also attract these limitations or it's for only student tier. can teachers still use clause opus and sonnet? |

Not the right decision. CodeX with GPT is no where near ready to be used in a student environment. If students using Claude is to expensive for github, limits need to be put in place, not it being removed outright. |

Hello, although it wasn't great, it was mandatory because this seems unsustainable for Microsoft to just give the most expensive model for free, I might be wrong though as I don't have the numbers for their revenue. For anyone who still wants to access these models, just go for the pro subscription (be careful not the trial, because the latest models are disabled there). First enable the trial subscription -> then press manage subscription -> start paid subscription. It's a fair price for the value that copilot gives. |

I need Sonnet 4.6 to fix the bugs in my program!! You can’t just take away all the smart programming models like that! 😭 |

@martinwoodward I may be missing part of the commercial logic here, but from a user’s perspective this seems like a missed long-term opportunity for GitHub. Giving students subsidised access to top-tier models could build strong future adoption, because once they become accustomed to higher-end tools, they’re less likely to want to move back to mid-tier options in industry and more likely to advocate for those tools in the workplace. |

Here's a question: Why? Is Github losing money? What is the problem here? You guys yourselves said millions of students are using it, and you're letting each and every one of them.
BAHAHAH. Sure. |

Incredibly disappointed and frustrated. Being unable to use Sonnet or Opus leaves almost no options for models within VSCode, and this means that it is impossible to get any work done. This feels more like a cheap cost-cutting move rather than $10 billion company. But who knows, maybe they'll listen to our feedback - but I doubt it. |

I used the existing models and they produce crap output. GPT-5.3 sucks and Gemini is not right there for coding. Please bring back Sonnet and Opus and rate limit it instead! Copilot is not usable at the moment and I'm planning to move to antigravity |

Everyone listen up please! You can get access to claude Sonnet and Opus 4.6 by using Google Antigravity. Don't use this sh*t anymore. |

At GitHub, we believe the next generation of developers should have access to the latest industry technology. That’s why we provide students with free access to the GitHub Student Developer Pack, run the Campus Experts program to help student leaders build tech communities, and partner with Major League Hacking (MLH) and Hack Club to support student hackathons and youth-led coding communities. It’s also why we offer verified students free access to GitHub Copilot—today, nearly two million students are using it to build, learn, and explore new ideas.
Copilot is evolving quickly, with new capabilities, models, and experiences shipping fast. As Copilot evolves and the student community continues to grow, we need to make some adjustments to ensure we can provide sustainable, long-term GitHub Copilot access to students worldwide.
Our commitment to providing free access to GitHub Copilot for verified students is not changing. What is changing is how Copilot is packaged and managed for students.
What this means for you
Starting today, March 12, 2026, your complimentary Copilot access will be managed under a new GitHub Copilot Student plan, alongside your existing GitHub Education benefits. Your academic verification status will not change, and there is nothing you need to do to continue using Copilot. You will see that you are on the GitHub Copilot Student plan in the UI, and your existing premium request unit (PRU) entitlements will remain unchanged.
As part of this transition, however, some premium models, including GPT-5.4, and Claude Opus and Sonnet models, will no longer be available for self-selection under the GitHub Copilot Student Plan. We know this will be disappointing, but we’re making this change so we can keep Copilot free and accessible for millions of students around the world.
That said, through Auto mode, you'll continue to have access to a powerful set of models from providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. We'll keep adding new models and expanding the intelligence in Auto mode that helps match the right model to your task and workflow. We support a global community of students across thousands of universities and dozens of time zones, so we’re being intentional about how we roll out changes. Over the coming weeks, we will be making additional adjustments to available models or usage limits on certain features — the specifics of which we'll be testing with your feedback.
We want your input
Your experience matters to us, and your feedback will directly shape how this plan evolves. Leave a comment below, what's working for you, what gets in the way, and what you need most. We will also be continuing to host 1:1 conversations with students, educators, and Campus Experts, and using insights from our recent November 2025 student survey to help inform what's next.
GitHub's investment in students is not slowing down. We are committed to ensuring that Copilot remains a powerful, free tool for verified students, and we will continue to improve and expand the student experience over time.
We will share updates as we learn more from testing and your feedback. Thank you for building with us.
Update March 13: We've now added the option so folks can upgrade from your GitHub Copilot Student plan to a paid GitHub Copilot Pro or GitHub Copilot Pro+ plan if you want to, while retaining the rest of your GitHub Student Pack benefits.
